DATING ESSENTIALS: MAKING EYE CONTACT

By Gladys Alvarez
Miami, Florida

When you meet someone new or see someone you are interested in do you make eye contact? Making eye contact is an essential part of dating as it is the unspoken form of communication. Some people think of it as flirting.

Next time you are riding the bus take a look at the people around you. What are they doing? If you really look you will notice most of the people looking anywhere but at each other. Some will be looking out the window, others will be emerged in a book or newspaper, while others will be staring at the floor. Anything to avoid eye contact with another. Why do some people avoid making eye contact with others? One of the main reasons is because eye contact is personal, it’s a language all its own and when we make eye contact with people it is almost like a personal invitation, the opening invitation to a conversation. How often do you pass by someone, look them in the eye and not at least say hello.

When it comes to making eye contact with someone you are interested in, it isn’t as easy. Eye contact with a potential date starts with a quick glance and then look away; a subtle form of flirting. Followed by more eye contact, a smile, a glance down, and perhaps a light blush across your cheeks.
When women do this, and it’s quite common, this lets the man know they are interested. The man who you have flirted with will then make his way over to you and the verbal conversation will begin opening things up for a possible future date.
Some women are too shy to successfully pull off flirting by using eye contact. Women who are confident in themselves and what they want, the ones who aren’t afraid to go after what they want are most often extremely successful and find themselves regular dates this way.

People underestimate the power of eye contact and flirting. All it takes is one sweet and innocent look from a smiling woman and men can’t resist. So contrary to what a lot believe, eye contact is an essential part of dating. Don’t underestimate the power of flirting with your eyes. Men are attracted to women who are confident in themselves enough to grab a man’s attention with their eyes and keep it. And as with anything practice makes perfect, so next time you are out in the grocers or at a club and you see someone you are attracted to make eye contact and have fun flirting.
